How Students Can Change the CultureAlcohol use continues to be a significant problem on collegecampuses across the nation as well as in North Dakota. North Dakotastudents rated alcohol as the number one drug problem facing our state (NDCORE 2007). North Dakota students have reported negative consequences related to alcohol misuse and abuse. These consequences include missed classes, dropping out of school, physical and sexual assaults, disrupted studying, and even death. Reducing the misuse of alcohol is one of the keys to creating a safe and healthier atmosphere that is more conducive to academic excellence.Effective prevention efforts must involve the entire University community. Students have substantial impact on the campus culture.Getting Involved in Prevention on Your Campus· Serve on your campuses’ Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Task Force.· Develop a fun public relations campaign.· Write “op-ed” pieces or “letters to the editor”.· Establish a designated driver program.· Create a list of existing substance-free social activities· Become involved in peer to peer training.· Make the decision to never drink and drive! |
