More Reasons to Join SAS

By joining Division 17 ( Society of Counseling Psychology) students are automatically enrolled in the SAS (Student Affiliates of Seventeen). SAS is a great place for students to begin to develop their identities within counseling psychology as well as develop professional relationships with other students and professional psychologists. The future of counseling psychology rests in the hands of students who are eager to shape their future as well as the future of the profession. By joining SAS, students have opportunities for presenting their research at the Annual APA conference, meeting and networking with scholars in counseling psychology and develop as a future professional.

The tangible benefits of joining SAS for only $17 per year are: home delivery of The Counseling Psychologist, the flagship journal of counseling psychology, the Division 17 Newsletter, which is published three times a year, as well as access to the comprehensive SAS website. This website, designed specifically with students in mind, features information about internship preparation, licensure, independent research, dissertation, preparing future faculty, articles and podcasts from seminal figures in counseling psychology, as well as other topics of interest such as advocacy, diversity, and practice issues.

Some of the intangible benefits of membership in SAS include the ability to connect with other students around the country with similar interests, meeting faculty and practitioners at the annual conventions, and attending specialized programming at APA the Annual Convention of the APA developed by SAS. Programming at APA, through the SAS is student focused, and includes a poster session, a round table or colloquium, and a social hour.

Finally, for interested students, the opportunity exists to become more formally involved in SAS by becoming a campus representative or regional coordinator. For further information regarding these opportunities, please read the descriptions of the duties of SAS campus representatives as well as the regional coordinator positions.
