This file describes the other files in the 02issue03 directory. In the computer.column directory at this site, I have now placed a cumulative index of all the Computer Column program code at this site, keyed by the issue in which it appeared. This index file, compcol.txt, has been updated and the new version is also in the 02issu03.zip file mentioned below. The file periodic.bas contains the code from the May/Jun 2002 Computer Column. For each period, it displays two ICs, one calculated for a normal polyalphabetic block and one calculated for a Nicodemus block. See the Column text in The Cryptogram for an explanation of the program's theory and use. The file lrbion.bas contains BION's program for calculating the LR statistic to help decide whether an unknown cipher is fractionated morse. He has given permission for his program to be included here. See his article in The Cryptogram, May/Jun 2002. The file 02issu03.zip contains the files in this directory. It also contains the index of Computer Column files at this site, indexed by the year in which they appeared. The .zip was created under MS-DOS and its files are in DOS ascii text format. A note for users: Except for the .zip file, the other files in this directory are in Unix text format, which is different from MsDos format. Users of Windows/Dos are advised to download the .zip file and extract its contents using WinZip or some other unzip utility. If you download the text files directly, you will find that .bas basic programs work within QBasic and its editor, but the files may not display correctly in other editors (for example, Notepad). If you download the text files directly, you can avoid problems by converting them to DOS format. The program Unix2Dos was published in the ND00 column and can be downloaded. It was intended for use with word lists, but it will convert other text files to DOS format, too.
