Solidarity statement from the Women Studies Executive Committee regarding the Nickname/Logo

Native American women and children seem to be taking a large amount of the anger being expressed against the proposal that UND change its nickname and logo. Too, women have been among the strongest and most courageous voices in speaking up to defend themselves against the harassment and to assert clearly and persuasively reasons for making the change.

The Executive Committee of the UND Women Studies Program supports and joins our sisters and brothers in the fight against the disrespect shown by the use of the image of a people as a fund-raising and group-cohesion tool by the University. We are especialy concerned about the campus climate that has been created by this controversy and urge all members of the university community to be especially watchful about the potential for violence, both verbal and physical.
