Dr. Rebecca Weaver-Hightower, Advisor
I've been at UND for
two years but have lived in the Midwest for five years.
I am originally from the Southeast. I also spent a
year in Australia, which I loved! Have traveled
quite a bit, including 3 weeks in South Africa
this summer. I'm a postcolonialist, which means
that I study the literature of former British
colonies and Britain itself. I have a book
coming out this spring from the University of Minnesota
Press: _Empire Islands: Castaways, Cannibals,
and Fantasies of Conquest in Post/Colonial Island
Narratives_. It's a study of castaway tales
(like Robinson Crusoe) and how they provided
fantasies of natural colonization that helped to
spur the expansion of empire. My husband and I
have 2 cats. I hate to cook, but love to eat. I
read, study judo, and sing with the Grand Forks
Master Chorale for fun.
Favorite texts and authors: I like
the Australian novelist, Peter Carey, the
Caribbean writer, George Lamming, and the British
writer, AS Byatt, but for fun I read science
fiction (I just finished Orson Scott Card's
Ender's Game series), and I read all of the Harry
Potter books last summer and really liked them.
