Undergraduate Audition Requirements
Entrance Audition Requirements and Recommendations:
The Audition is an essential requisite for piano
majors in the Department of Music admission process. Candidates may
submit a tape-recording of their performance should time or distance
make a in-person audition impossible. In submitting a taped audition,
care must be taken in the selection of recording equipment to ensure
good results. Cassette tapes or videocassettes are acceptable.
The audition should feature three contrasting
pieces from a variety of stylistic periods demonstrating the applicant's
musical ability in regard to tone, technique, pitch and expressiveness.
Applicants are free to choose works from those recommended below or music
of comparable quality, and prepared to play scales in all keys.
Bachelor
of Music (Piano Performance):
Applicants should present from memory a 15-minute
program featuring three contrasting pieces from the four style periods
outlined below:

Baroque -- a work by Scarlatti, Handel, or
J.S. Bach, equivalent in difficulty to Bach's Two or Three-Part Inventions,
or
excerpts from Handel's
Suites;

Classical -- a sonata-allegro movement by
Clementi, Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven;
-
Romantic -- a work by Schubert, Chopin, Liszt
etc.;
-
Twentieth Century-- a work by Debussy, Poulenc,
Ravel, Bartok etc..

Bachelor
of Music (Music Education); Bachelor of Arts (Music):
Applicants should present a 10 minute program featuring
three contrasing pieces from the four style periods outlined below:

Baroque -- a work by Scarlatti, Handel, or
J.S. Bach, equivalent in difficulty to Bach's Two-Part Inventions,selections
from Handel's
Suites;

Classical-- a work by Clementi, Haydn, Mozart
or Beethoven, e.g., Clementi's
Sonatinas;
-
Romantic-- a work by Schubert, Chopin, Liszt
etc. e.g., Chopin's Preludes or Waltzes;
-
Twentieth Century -- a work by Debussy, Poulenc,
Ravel, Bartok etc., e.g. a selection from Bartok's Mikrokosmos
