You are responsible for purchasing the scores of the pieces assigned during the academic year.

Course Description:

Prepare for and attend weekly studio lessons.  Piano students at all levels of advancement are expected to study works appropriate to their ability from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods, as well as works from the 20th Century.  Technical studies, scales, chords, and arpeggios are to be covered in accordance with your abilities.

 

Attendance Policy:

Regular, punctual attendance at lessons and performance classes is expected.  Lessons will be made up only when the instructor has professional engagements or in cases of lengthy illnesses.  If a lesson change is required for any other reason, it is the student's responsibility to swap lesson times with someone else.  Lessons can not be made up due to lack of preparation.
 

Performance classes:

Performance classes provide opportunities to listen to, and perform in front of your peers.  You are expected to attend each Performance Class and perform a memorized piece in class at least once each semester.  This semester,  performance classes will be held in the Josephine Campbell Recital Hall on Monday, October 30, 2000 from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

Evaluation:

The final grade will be based on:
Lesson participation, preparation, progress and attitude:  50%
Performance Class participation:  20%
Jury:  20%
Scale and Arpeggio Pop Quizzes:  10%
Extra Credit up to 10 points by attending selected recitals during the semester.

Grading:

A - Unusually high degree of effort and progress with mastery of the assigned  materials.
B - Highly satisfactory effort, progress, and performance of the assigned materials.
C - Adequate effort and progress with generally competent performance of the  assigned materials.
D - Inadequate effort, progress, and performance of the assigned materials, but  enough effort and progress to warrant a passing grade.
F - Unsatisfactory work.

 

Juries and Jury Requirements:

The end of the semester jury provides a goal for you to work towards and a forum in which to display your best work in front of the Piano Faculty.  They will be held on Monday, December 18, 2000 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm in the Josephine Campbell Recital Hall.  Pre Juries will be on Monday, December 11, 2000, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the JCRH.

* Music 105, 195 K, 295 K, 395 K, 495 K, and 594
Prepare one work and one etude (not to exceed 8 minutes).  For the etude, memory is optional.

* Music 196 K, 296 K, 396 K, 496 K: (Undergraduate Performance Majors)
Prepare two works from different style periods and one etude (not to exceed 10 minutes).  Memory is required.

* Music 596 (Graduate Performance Majors)
Prepare at least three contrasting works from different style periods (not to exceed 15 minutes).  Memory is required.

* Music 596 (Graduate Pedagogy Majors)
Prepare at least three contrasting works from different style periods (not to exceed 10 minutes).  Memory is required.

Recital Juries:

Students planning to give recitals should make arrangements for their recital juries at least two weeks before the performance.
