The major cliff forming formations are the Kaibab Limestone and the Coconino Sandstone. Softer shales and shaley limestones of the Toroweap Fm. and Hermit Sh. erode to produce scree covered slopes. The red sandstones and shales below the Hermit Shale belong to the Supai Group. The Supai Group includes several different formations not easily differentiated at this scale.
