Endangered Species
by Cindy Scott

Introduction
Many different animals face extinction due to various
reasons. These reasons are often directly related to the actions of human
beings. Therefore, we have the ability to help prevent these animals from
becoming extinct. There are organizations such as The National Wildlife
Federation that try to save these animals by letting people know what needs
to be done to protect the animals. As you look through different sites,
you will learn how you can help!
Task
As a group, you will choose an animal that you wish to
protect. You will type a letter that could be sent to the National Wildlife
Federation explaining why this animal should be saved. You also will need
to include what you plan to do to help save this animal.
Resources

topics or click on a picture to visit a site.
Process
- You will be put into groups of four.
- Within your group you will need to appoint an encourager/leader,
an investigator, a recorder, and a reporter.
- You will all be responsible for gathering and presenting
the information, but each person will have a specific task that he/she
is in charge of.
- The encourager/leader will encourage the group's efforts
and keep the group on task.
- The investigator will lead the group in gathering the
information about the animal.
- The recorder will write down the information that is
gathered and to the actual typing of the letter.
- The reporter will be responsible for reading the letter
to the class.
- Your group should visit the given web sites and any other
sites that you choose to gather information about an endangered animal
that you wish to protect.
- After you have chosen an animal and gathered information
about it, you may wish to visit The
National Wildlife Federation homepage.
- This will give you an idea of how to write your letter,
and what information you may want to include.
- The letter should state why your animal needs to be protected,
how it should be protected, and how you are going to help.
- Type a copy of the letter and also e-mail a copy to me.
Evaluation
Your letters will be evaluated based on a point system.
There will be a maximum of 10 points possible. The full 10 points will
be given if the letter is thoughtful, complete, organized and professional
looking. You will also be asked to write an evaluation of your group's
efforts.
