Introduction
I am currently associate professor and Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering
at the University of North Dakota. I am also a licensed professional engineer
in the state of North Dakota. I teach classes ranging from ME101 (Intro to ME)
in the freshman year to ME524 (Deformation and Fracture) at the graduate level. My
research can be generally described as in the areas of materials behavior and manufacturing
methods. While at UND I have participated in research projects related to
energy dissipation, fracture and fatigue of fiber composites, adding pollution control catalysts
to fiber filters via mechanical milling, ductile fracture of aluminum alloys,
diffusion bonding of nickel and iron alloys, and corrosion fatigue of aluminum.
In the classroom, I have conducted studies related to perceptions and retention
in freshman engineers, collaboration between undergraduate and high school students,
and the use of virtual laboratories for materials education.
The sections below give an overview of my past and current activities. For a

Teaching
I am committed to excellent engineering education at both the undergraduate
and graduate levels. I typically teach ME301 (Materials Science) in the
fall and a graduate materials course in the spring. I often teach ENGR201 (Statics)
in the summer. Other courses I have taught at UND (some more recently than others)
include ME101, ENGR202 (Dynamics), ME420 (Composite Materials), ME483 (Senior Seminar),
ME524, and ME542 (Thermodynamics of Materials).
I have participated in a number of teaching-related professional development
activities including the National Effective Teaching Institute, Case Studies in
Science Workshop, ASME Essential Teaching Seminar, New Approaches in Materials and
Manufacturing Education Seminar, and numerous teaching seminars at UND. I am
a consultant in the Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SGID) program at UND
which helps instructors improve their teaching through student feedback and peer
input. I have been a member of the American Society for Engineering Education
(ASEE) since 1999.
