White Paper

A “white paper” summarizing the discussion at the Future Directions session at the Twelfth Midwest Geometry Conference is now available.

Overview

The Midwest Geometry Conference is a series of conferences devoted to the discussion of recent scholarly research in geometry and related fields. Mathematicians, scientists, and students are encouraged to participate. The National Science Foundation has officially awarded a grant in support of this conference series. The Twelfth Midwest Geometry Conference will take place in Grand Forks, North Dakota on April 26, 27, and 28, 2002.

Program

The Twelfth Midwest Geometry Conference will begin at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, April 26 and conclude at approximately 10:30 A.M. on Sunday, April 28. It will include five sessions organized as follows:

  1. Lie Groups and Geometry
Organizers: Gestur Ólafsson and Bob Stanton
Speakers: This session will begin at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, April 26, 2002.

  2. Geometric PDE
Organizers: Dan Knopf and Lihe Wang
Speakers: This session will take place in the morning on Saturday, April 27.

  3. Quantum Geometry and Topology
Organizers: Jorge Calvo, Charlie Frohman, and Bill Schwalm
Speakers: This session will take place in the afternoon on Saturday, April 27.

  4. Future Directions
Moderators: Tom Branson and Bob Stanton
    Overview:
The moderators and participants will discuss the state of the art, current directions, and emerging opportunities in the fields represented at the conference. This session will take place at approximately 8:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 27.

  5. Gravitation
Organizers: John Beem, Tom Branson, and Vincent Rodgers
Speakers: This session will take place on Sunday, April 28 and will conclude at approximately 10:30 A.M. The talk by Abhay Ashtekar, however, is a joint talk for the Gravitation and Quantum Geometry and Topology sessions and will be scheduled in the afternoon on Saturday, April 27.

The above program is subject to change. Further information (including an hour-by-hour schedule) is available.

Travel

The NSF has officially awarded a grant in support of this conference. Please feel free to proceed with travel arrangements.

Northwest Airlines together with its feeder airline, Mesaba Airlines, provides several daily direct flights between Grand Forks and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Amtrak trains stop in Grand Forks, and bus service to Grand Forks is also avaiable.

Additional information on travel to Grand Forks and travel within Grand Forks is available.

The conference budget includes full reimbursement for the travel, lodging, and per diem expenses of the eleven invited speakers. The budget also includes a limited amount of support for the other participants. Graduate students and recent Ph.D. graduates will receive the highest priority for such support. The organizers hope to fully meet the needs of all graduate students and recent graduates, but no particular level of support can be guaranteed in advance of the conference. Participants who have other sources of support, especially NSF support, are asked to use this other support as much as possible. Your cooperation in this matter will be helpful to those who lack outside sources of support, and it will also help to assure the success of the Midwest Geometry Conference in the future.

Although participants from outside the US are welcome, the Twelfth Midwest Geometry Conference unfortunately cannot provide financial support for international travel. The one exception will be for ground travel from Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada). Budget constraints make this policy essential.

Lodging

Many of the conference participants and speakers will be staying at the Holiday Inn, Ramada Inn, or Super 8 Motel in Grand Forks. If you wish to stay at the Holiday Inn or Ramada Inn, we ask that you make your reservations through the conference organizers in the manner described in the current conference announcement. The managers of some of the hotels seem to be quite flexible in accepting late reservations for conference participants and speakers. But please take care of hotel reservations as soon as possible by sending in your conference registration form. A blank registration form is available at the end of the current conference announcement.

Participation

The organizers of the Midwest Geometry Conference encourage participation by graduate students, junior mathematicians and scientists, postdoctoral researchers, women, members of underrepresented groups, experienced geometers, as well as scientists and mathematicians from fields outside of geometry.

The lecture hall will be accessible to people with disabilities.

Registration

If you will be attending the conference, please register in advance. The latest conference announcement contains an electronic registration form which you may download and edit. Send the completed form to mgc2002@und.nodak.edu.

No conference registration fee will be charged.

Nonresident Aliens

The University of North Dakota may require special paperwork to process the expense reimbursement requests of speakers and participants who are nonresident aliens. If you are a nonresident alien, please tell us what type of visa you hold by contacting mgc2002@und.nodak.edu. The extra paperwork is required only for nonresidents holding a B-1 or B-2 visa who wish to receive expense reimbursement. Additional information is available from University of North Dakota Accounting Services.
