Instructions

This page contains a link to the Mathematica computer lab notebook for Dr. Peterson's ninth computer lab assignment. Mathematica is a computer program which performs mathematical computations. The Mathematica program is currently available on the computers in the Mathematics Computer Lab (the Math Lab) in the basement of Witmer Hall. Here are instructions for doing your assignment:
  1. Make sure you have a few sheets of blank paper with smooth edges. The attendant in the Math Lab may be able to provide you with a few sheets of paper for a very modest charge.
  2. The Math Lab in the basement of Witmer Hall is open from 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M., Monday through Thursday and from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. on Fridays. Individual instructors may reserve the lab for their classes, but these reservations are indicated on a bulletin board outside the Math Lab. Find a time at which the Math Lab is not reserved for another class, and go there at that time. Bring the handout “Basic Introduction to Mathematica”, if you have it. It may help you. I passed this out in class.
  3. Sit down by a computer and start it. If you are not familiar with Mathematica, then look at the handout and do what it says. When you are finished, continue with these instructions here.
  4. Start the Internet Explorer Web browser application. You can also use Netscape, but because of the way the computers are configured, the use of Netscape will result in a slight change to the procedure. You may work in groups of at most three people.
  5. Come to this Web page, and click on the following link:
    Lab Nine: Parametric Surfaces.
  6. The computer should then ask you if you really want to open the file. Click on “Yes”.
  7. Mathematica should now start up. It should display a notebook that I have developed. Follow the instructions in that notebook. Let me know if you have any problems. The Lab attendant may also be able to help you. If this assignment takes more than fifty minutes, come to see me.
  8. Do not turn off the computer until after you have done the shutdown procedure. If you do not know what this means, then just leave the computer running when you leave.
  9. Hand in your assignment by 4:10 P.M. on Tuesday, December 9, 2003.

Handout

Here is the handout that I passed out in class: Basics.nb.

Other Lab Assignments

Here are some other lab assignments. All of them are either optional assignments, which are not to be handed in, or past assignments, which I have already collected. To see the lab assignments, go to the Math Lab in the basement of Witmer Hall, and click on the appropriate link below.

LabOne.nb: Space Curves
LabTwo.nb: Functions of Multiple Variables
LabThree.nb: Contour Maps
LabFour.nb: Gradients
LabFive.nb: Roots of Equations
LabSix.nb: Riemann Sums
LabSeven.nb: Vector Fields
LabEight.nb: Symbolic Differentiation and Integration

As usual, let me know if you need any help.
