  These office hours apply to all days on which classes are in session. These office hours do not apply during university recesses and holidays, on Reading and Review Day (December 14, 2001), or during final exam week. • Textbook: Calculus, Fourth Edition, by James Stewart (Brooks/Cole, Pacific Grove, California, 1999). Please read the book as the course progresses. I will give you some advice on how to do this effectively.
• Course content: This is the second semester of a three-semester sequence of calculus courses. This three-semester sequence is the standard calculus sequence for students in science, engineering, mathematics, and other disciplines that require a thorough background in calculus. Much of Math 166 will center around the study of various new techniques for computing integrals. The course will also cover infinite sequences and series, parametric equations, polar coordinates, and the calculus of the exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.
• Study time: Many of you will find that this is a difficult course. You should plan on spending at least two hours of study outside of class for each class period. If you are spending less than this amount of time, then spend some extra time reading the book or doing problems above and beyond those that I assign.
• Tutorial help: You can come to see me in my office for help with questions or difficulties that you may have. Tutorial help is also available in the Mathematics Learning Center (Room 312, Witmer Hall) and in the University Learning Center (Room 201A, Memorial Union).
• Grading:
  • Midterm exams: 60%
  • Final exam: 25%
  • Quizzes: 15%
• Quizzes: There will be approximately ten quizzes. I may or may not announce these quizzes in advance. Some quizzes may be take-home quizzes. One "quiz" will probably be in the form of a small set of exercises for you to do in the Mathematics Computer Lab. In general I do not allow quiz makeups, but we will drop your lowest two quiz scores.
• Homework: I will assign homework problems regularly but will not collect your solutions. Please work on all assigned problems in a timely fashion and seek help with problems that frustrate you. A basket in the waiting area in the Mathematics office (Room 313 Witmer Hall) will contain solutions to past homework problems. You may look at these solutions in Room 313 or photocopy them in Room 211, Witmer Hall. I encourage you to work in groups.
• Exams: There will be four midterm exams and one final exam. The midterm exams will occur in class during regular class periods. The final exam will be comprehensive with an emphasis on the material that we cover after the fourth midterm. I will announce firm exam dates in class.
• Grading scale: 90% A, 80% B, 70% C, 60% D. I may lower this scale.
• Changes to policies: Course policies, including all policies described in this syllabus, are subject to change. I will announce any changes to the policies.
• Computers: You do not have to buy a computer or a graphing calculator for this course. I will not allow you to use computers or calculators during exams. One class session will take place in the Mathematics Computer Lab, but no previous computing experience is necessary for this course.
• Absences from exams: If you will be absent from an exam, call me in advance.
• Attendance policy: I want you to succeed in this course. Please attend all class sessions if possible. Please be respectful and considerate of the professor and of other students in the class.
