Announcements

The final exam for our section of this course will take place from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. on Monday, May 5, 2008, in Witmer Hall, Room 116. We will share the room with my Math 146 students. Please sit as close to the right-hand side of the room (as you face the front) as possible. This will facilitate the distribution of the exams. Please sit on the right-hand side of each table, one person to a table.

Our section of this course has been moved to Room 302, Witmer Hall.

If you go to the Barnes & Noble bookstore to purchase the textbook, it could happen that the textbook is out of stock. If this should happen, then to obtain the book from the bookstore, you may need to talk to the people at the textbook counter and ask them to order the book for you. The textbook may also be available at the Dakota Textbook Company, 415 North 42nd Street, Grand Forks, or from other book distributors (such as an Internet-based distributors).

    Due February 1, 2008

    Due February 4, 2008

  8. Section 8.1: "Exercises" 5, 9, 15, 19, 45, 46
    Due February 12, 2008
Notes: For problems 5 and 9, compute MN only. In other words, use the Midpoint Rule but not the Trapezoidal Rule.
Notes: Some of these exercises will be much easier for you if you use a graphing calculator. The important thing is to have a calculator with a screen which displays the formulas you are typing in (including the "+" signs and the parentheses). If you do not have such a calculator, you may wish to use Mathematica. We have Mathematica in the Math Computer Lab in the basement of Witmer Hall. We will soon have a computer lab exercise in which I will explain how to do numerical integration with Mathematica.

  9. Do the computer lab on "Numerical Integration" which is available on my Web site. Click on this link for further information.
    Due February 14, 2008
Notes: I will also provide a short handout with information on how to do our computer lab exercises.
Notes: You may work in groups, but the papers you hand in should contain just one name only (namely yours).
Notes: Do the lab on "Numerical Integration" and hand in your results. It is not necessary to do the other computer labs at this time.

  10. Section 8.2: 1, 7, 12, 14, 20, 25, 27, 36, 45, 50
    Due February 15, 2008

  11. Section 8.3: 3, 6, 10, 11, 13, 29, 32, 35, 40, 41, 49, 52
    Due February 19, 2008

  12. Section 8.4: 5, 16, 17, 21, 22, 25
    Due February 22, 2008

  13. Section 8.5: 4, 7, 11, 12, 18, 23, 31, 42, 43, 54, 57
    Due February 29, 2008

  14. Section 8.6: 5, 6, 11, 12, 21, 36, 39, 41, 51, 66, 67, 73
    Due February 29, 2008

  15. Section 9.1: 1, 3, 8, 9, 13, 32, 33, 36
    Due March 11, 2008
Hint for Problem 13: Use Mathematica or a graphing calculator. If you do not have the time to do this, then at least look at the problem. Try to see how you would use Simpson's Rule to solve the problem.
Hint for Problem 36: Use the integral table in the back of the book.

  16. Section 9.2: 1, 2, 5, 10
    Due March 14, 2008

  17. Section 9.3: 1, 2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 20, 21

    Due March 28, 2008
    Note for problems 17 and 18: "T2(x) at x = a" means "the Taylor polynomial T2(x) centered at x = a."
Hint for Problem 29: Use the box on page 499.
Note: The due date for this assignment was origially March 20, 2008. I have extended the due date.
