PIANO PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
- BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN MUSIC EDUCATION
- BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN PERFORMANCE
- BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION (with a combined major in elementary education and music)
- BACHELOR OF ARTS, MUSIC THERAPY Emphasis
For these degrees, you must take four semesters of piano during which you must demonstrate three levels of piano proficiency. Most students meet these requirements by taking keyboard skills classes for four semesters (MUSC 133, 136, 233, 236). Piano principals (i.e., your major instrument is piano) and students with exceptionally strong backgrounds in piano may substitute four semesters of individual piano lessons (MUSC 154 or 155, MUSC 254 or 255) and a series of proficiency tests.
Note that admittance to individual lessons is by audition and only at the recommendation of the piano department. These auditions take place at the beginning of every fall semester, and by special arrangement, at the beginning of the spring semester.
- OTHER BACHELOR OF ARTS Music Majors
You must take one semester of piano during which you must demonstrate one level of piano proficiency. This may be done by successful completion of MUSC 133 or by successful completion of one semester of MUSC 154 and the Level 1 proficiency tests. See note above regarding admittance to individual lessons
There is no piano proficiency requirement.
You have piano requirements beyond the Level III proficiency. Consult your teacher to make sure you know the specific "major instrument" requirements for your degree.
