Chapter 8 Assignments and Final Exam Content

 

 

These assignments count for 35% of your final grade.

Part 1 - To be performed in class on 04/18/01

Technique

11 + 12 + 12 = 35 points

C harmonic minor scale, two octaves ascending and descending without repeat of the top note.
G natural minor scale, two octaves ascending and descending without repeat of the top note.
A melodic minor scale, two octaves ascending and descending without repeat of the top note.

Grading Note: For a grade of B or better on each scale, you must play it hands together. A well played scale that is performed hands separately will receive a grade of C. A well played scale that is performed in one hand only will receive a grade of D. Note that a well played scale is even in touch and in tempo and has correct pitches as well as correct fingering.

Harmonization

Harmonize p. 215c using a two-handed strumming style as indicated.

Part 2 - To be performed in class on 04/25/01

Harmonization

Harmonize p. 214b using a two-handed march accompaniment in the style indicated.

Harmonize p. 216a using a waltz style as indicated.

Part 3 - To be performed in class on 05/02/01

Transposition

35 points

Transpose ETUDE in A MINOR, p. 205 into the key of E minor.

Improvisation

52 points

Improvise on the repeats of the ETUDE IN A MINOR, p. 205. For your improvisation giving consideration to the style of the piece, experiment with right-hand melodies using some or all of the following: scalar passages, broken chord figures, combinations of scalar passages and broken chord figures, ornaments (e.g., mordent, trill, turn). You may use the left hand given by the composer or you may construct one of your own (i.e., one that is based on the harmonies of the piece).

Extra Credit - 10 points

Using expanded blues pentascales in the right hand and open 7ths in the left hand, improvise on a standard 12-bar blues progression in 4/4 time. You choose the key. For more information, see p. 219.

Part 5 (Exam) - To be performed on Monday, May 6th according to the sign-up schedule posted on the door of the Piano Lab.
Students wishing to take their exams early may do so by special arrangement with Mr. Almeida.
