Chapter 1 Assignments

All items except for the improvisation are to be recorded on computer disk and handed in together with your track listing by the dates listed below. These assignment count for 15% of your final grade.

Note: If you play this item well in 3 keys, you will receive an A, well in 2 keys a B, and well in 1 key a C.

Chapter 4 Assignments and Exam

Consult the track listing for items that are to be submitted on computer disk by 12/14/00. All other items are to be performed "live" for your instructor on 12/18/00. Sign-up sheets for individual exam time slots will be posted during the last week of classes.

This assignment/exam counts for 30% of your final grade.

Technique*

Choose up to 5 of the following exercises:
pp. 90-93, 1, 2b, 3c, 4, 7b
Note that #7b requires you to play and conduct.

Improvisation

15 points

With the left hand, play the following F major progression moving to the closest chord possible. At the same time, using chord tones only improvise a right-hand melody. Note that this progression is in 3/4 time.

On these sections of this assignment, to earn a grade of:

A - you must play 5 items well.
B - you must play 4 items well.
C - you must play 3 items well.
D - you must play 2 items well.
F - you play 1 or fewer items well
