About This Site

We are the members of the Fall 1996, Instrumental Literature Course taught by Dr. Katherine Norman at the University of North Dakota. The course activities focus on the construction of this web site. We are collating information from a variety of "traditional" resources (e.g., scores, recordings, reviews of band music, music teacher recommendation) and then presenting a synthesis of that information (i.e., text, sound, graphics) here. The purpose of the web site is to inform others about concert band literature, but in the process of informing others, we are learning about the subject, as well. Specifically, our web site encompasses the following:

(1) An information repository that includes:

• An annotated multimedia bibliography of concert band music
• An annotated discography of concert band music
• Analyses of selected concert band repertoire.
• Recommendations for quality concert band literature
  • results from a survey of North Dakota band directors
  • print resources (books, articles, lists)
  • meeting the National Standards through concert band literature
  • considerations in the selection and grading of concert band music and recordings,
  • considerations in concert programming
  • instrumentation lists

(2) A search and retrieval resource that includes:

• Publisher/distributor addresses
  
• Links to other concert band sites, and

(3) A forum for discussion among students, teachers, and devotees of concert band music.
