Software Downloads
There are a number of programs and tools available online for free that will assist in digitization projects.
Here is a partial list available either from UND or elsewhere online. This list will be updated periodically.
- File Transfer Protocol (FTP) software is available through
UND ITSS for PC users. Mac users can download a free trial version of Fetch. If you are building a website, FTP software is necessary to upload your files to the web server.
- EmEditor is a free text editor that allows you to
code in whatever language you choose (XML, HTML, CSS, etc.).
- HTML Kit HTML Kit is a full-featured free editor for
HTML, XHTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and other text files. Over 400 plugins are available for it,
including HTML Tidy for creating standards -compliant web pages.
- oXygen XML editor is available online for a one month free trial. It supports TEI XML and validates as the file is created.
- Sourceforge.net offers a variety of tools for nearly every field that uses computers.
In addition to "work tools," they also offer multimedia and gaming freeware.
- Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities
also shares some of their tools for digital humanities.
Likewise, NINES makes its collation tools available.
Internet Browsers
Because the various browsers handle XHTML/HTML differently, it is important to test in as many browsers as possible. Netscape and Mozilla/Firefox
are available through UND or online for free.
