Problem Set 1- Due in class Friday 9/11/99

1. Use the Punnett Square method to calculate the F2 PHENOTYPIC ratios

of the following pea plant cross:

Tall, wrinkled-pea plant x dwarf, round-pea plant

T=tall allele

t=dwarf allele

R=round allele

r=wrinkled allele

2. Calculate the F2 GENOTYPIC ratios for the above cross using the

branch diagram method.

3. What is the probability of getting a tail when you flip a fair coin?

4. What is the probability of getting two tails when you flip 2 fair

coins (or flip one coin twice)?

5. What is the probability of getting two heads OR two tails when you

flip 2 fair coins?

6. What is the probability that a couple with three children will have 2 sons

and one daughter (in any order)? Reword this question using either AND or

OR (whichever is more appropriate) if you are having trouble figuring out

how to answer it.

7. What is the probability that a couple that has 6 daughters already will

have a son for the seventh child?

8. What is the probability that a couple that wants to have seven children

will have seven daughters?

9. Use the Punnett Square method to calculate the probability of

obtaining an individual with the genotype AAbb from parents with the

genotypes AaBb x Aabb?

10. Use probability theory to calculate the probability of obtaining an

individual with the genotype aaBBccDdEe from parents with the

genotypes AaBbCcDDee x aaBbCcddEE.

11. Use probability theory to calculate the probability of obtaining an

individual with the phenotype A-B-ccD-E- from parents with the genotypes

AAbbCCDdEe x aaBbccDdee?
