The Founding

University life was pretty cheap in the 1880's, the only fee was $3.50 per week for board in the Old Main building, which lacked a furnace and storm windows. Drinking water was hauled from town in barrels, and the University emptied its sewage into the coulee. A few enterprising students built shanties near the campus so they would have a place to live.
