1970

This
was a time of student protest, and UND students marched
against the Vietnam War, Civil Rights problems, and
other controversial topics. The Dakota Student printed
what many considered offensive items, and demands
for censorship came from all over. President Starcher
stood firm in his defense of free speech, however,
and was commended nationwide. Communist speakers
on campus were also causing protest. Protests over
the Vietnam War, rallies and marches, were common.
One of the largest demonstrations in the University's
history took place in May of 1970, when between 1500
and 2000 students gathered to protest the killings
at Kent State University. When a door glass was broken,
students took up a collection to pay for the damage. |
