1960

President
John F. Kennedy visited the campus on September 25,
1963, just two months before he was assassinated.
In 1962, a water fight beginning on University Avenue eventually brought out some 900 students, who tore down and burned telephone poles, blocked traffic, broke car windows, and threw coeds into the coulee. It began as a small mud fight, and escalated as students began scooping bucketfuls of mud out of the English Coulee and throwing it on each other -- and in -- Johnstone Fulton Hall. The Hall and its windows were smothered with mud, and it was one of the few times the Grand Forks Police were called to campus. The administration thereafter instituted Spring Break. |
