FAQ's about Licensing Server Software
'

This page has information about licensing for Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft SQL Server 2000, and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, along with the Client Access Licenses (CAL's) required for each. If you have questions about Microsoft Server software informatoin that is not listed here, please contact undsoftware@mail.und.edu, or visit www.Microsoft.com.

Q. What is the difference between a server software license and a CAL?

A. A server license gives the licese holder the right to install and use the server software. The Client Access License (CAL) allows a device or a user to access the server software. By using CAL's, you only pay for the capacity of the server that you use.

Q. What is the difference between a User-CAL and a Device-CAL?

A. A Device CAL allows one device (used by any user) to access or use the server software. This may be more cost-effective if there are multiple users per device. A User CAL allows one user (using any device) to access or use the server software.

Q. If I have more than one processor in my server, how many server software licenses do I need?

A. Windows Server and Exchange Server are not licensed per processor. However, SQL Server is licensed on a per processor basis.

Q. Do I need to purchase CAL's to for Exchanger server users?

A. Yes. Any user who accesses information on a computer running Microsoft Exchange server will need an Exchange Server CAL.

Q. How is licensing SQL Server different than other server software?

A. There are three different ways to license a SQL Server: Processor Licensing, server license plus Device CAL's, or server license plus User CAL's.

A processor license is needed for each processor installed on each server running SQL Server (or any of its components). This license allows access for an unlimited number of users or devices. CAL's are not needed when a processor license is being used.

The Device CAL and User CAL work the same as with other server software.

Q. If I partition my server and run several copies of an operating system on the one server, how many server licenses do I need?

A. You need to have the same number of server licenses as the number of copies you have of the operating system. Every copy of the server requires a license, whether they are all on one server or installed on many different servers.
