Certification in Special Education for Out of State Master’s Candidates
-
You must go to the licensing website of the state in which you will be teaching and find out what the procedures are for applying for certification/licensure in special education in that particular state. Most states require university sign-off to award teacher certification. This means that the licensing officer at the University of North Dakota (UND) will sign off on your license/certification application to whichever state you are applying, stating that you have met the requirements for licensure in special education in the state of North Dakota. If university sign off is required by the state to which you are applying, UND's licensing officer, Eric Tweton, must sign off on your application. He will only do so IF you have completed the certification requirements in the state of North Dakota.
-
North Dakota is a categorical state which means that certification in special education is available only in disability specific areas. UND’s online master’s programs meet the certification requirements in the areas of early childhood special education, learning disabilities (LD), emotional disturbance (ED), developmental/cognitive disabilities (DCD/MR), and special education strategist (a cross-categorical degree that meets the requirements in LD, ED, and DCD/MR). A sixth degree is offered in the area of visual impairment which is a summers only on-campus program.
-
A minimum master’s degree is 32 credits, although completing the requirements for any of the certification areas listed above requires more than 32 credits (typically 36-48). Thus, if you are only interested in a 32 credit degree, you will not meet the requirements for teacher certification.
