Administrator Information for the
Resident Teacher Program in Special Education

UND students, who are already certified teachers and are admitted to the graduate program in Special Education, complete a two year residency under the joint supervision of experienced special educators, UND mentors, and a UND special education faculty member.

Participating special education units or school districts are responsible for providing the funding of $16,160 for each resident teacher placed in their unit or school ($11,804 stipend and $500 fringe benefits to include health insurance for the RT, and $3,856 for supervision and program administration). Administered by UND, these funds are used to underwrite a 9 month half-time Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) appointment with tuition waiver or tuition scholarship for each RT (that covers a large portion, but not all of the master's program tuition). The "teaching" provided by the GTA-RT occurs within the participating school (August -May).

Payment for services will be made by the special education unit/school district quarterly basis upon receipt of a billing from UND.

Resident teachers are not considered to be under teaching contract for purposes of North Dakota Law.

As UND graduate students, they are expected to meet the requirements of the Graduate School and their academic programs, as well as those of their local special education unit or school district and the locations of their individual placements.

The special education unit or school district is expected to provide on-site supervising/mentorship and accept responsibility for duties to be performed by fully endorsed special educators to meet state requirements.

The special education unit or school district will agree to interview for potential employment any resident teacher who has completed the endorsement requirements if there are any special education openings.

Both UND and school personnel will be involved in the selection of resident teachers.

Interested schools and units must submit a letter of commitment and team plan (forms provided) by April 1. The "official" contract with UND must be signed no later than May 15.
