Middle Level Resident Teacher Program

The Middle Level Resident Teacher Program is a collaborative program offered through the College of Education and Human Development and the Grand Forks Public Schools. This program provides a cohort of first year licensed teachers (residents) an opportunity to earn their Master of Science in General Studies as well as receive support through a mentoring program as they enter their first year of teaching.

Resident Teachers
Each resident teacher will assume full responsibility for a middle level classroom and must be certified to teach in North Dakota. Resident teachers will earn stipends and a waiver of University tuition for a major portion of work toward the master's degree. Residents are responsible for university fees each semester. Resident teachers will enroll in graduate study during the summer prior to assuming teaching responsibilities and may complete their degree work the following summer.

Resident Mentor
The resident teacher program is enhanced by an experienced resident mentor from the Grand Forks Public Schools. This individual will coach and provide support to the resident teacher and work with the University faculty (in development of curriculum for teacher education).

University Mentor/Advisor
The University advisor represents the University of North Dakota's interests in the Resident Teacher Program. This individual advises the residents and links them to the services of the University. This University advisor offers the participants consultation and support both at the University and in the Grand Forks Public Schools

Application Procedures and Requirements

To qualify as a resident teacher, the following conditions must be met:

1. Complete undergraduate degree in Elementary, Middle Level or Secondary Education before residency begins.
   
2. Qualify for Elementary, Middle or Secondary certification in North Dakota.
   
3. Have a minimum overall GPA of 2.75, with preference given to those with a 3.00 GPA or better.
   
4. Submit a letter of interest and a resume to Dr. Ingwalson, College of Education and Human Development, Box 7189, University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND 58202-7189. Also submit copies to the principal of Valley Middle School.
   
5. Submit a complete application for the M.S. General Studies program to the Graduate School http://graduateschool.und.edu/. For further information click here to visit the admissions page.
   
6. Be available for graduate study during the summer sessions immediately preceding and following the residency.
