A 9-credit minor is selected in a subject in which the student has 20 undergraduate credits and is a subject in which UND offers a masters degree. The minor must be signed by the Chair of the department in which it is earned.

A 9-credit cognate is a collection of courses that broadly support the major.  Cognate credits may derive from various departments and may include courses from the 300 and 400 level (at UND only).  Students who are language, social studies, science, or middle school teachers often have cognates instead of minors.  A cognate is not named.

A program of study is designed jointly between the adviser and the student and is submitted to the Graduate School after the student has been enrolled for one semester.  The form is signed by the student and the adviser.

The proposal for a Scholarly Project (TL 995), and Independent Study (997) or a Thesis (TL 998) must be signed by the adviser and submitted to the Graduate School the semester before graduation.

Students who are interested in earning this degree should contact the General Studies coordinator, in the Department of Teaching & Learning or the graduate director of the department that offers the secondary teaching major.
