I have been a professor of special education at the University of North Dakota since 1990. Prior to that, I was a special education teacher for 15 years working with students with learning, cognitive, and emotional/behavioral disabilities. My interests and research have focused on the various aspects of including students with disabilities in the general education classroom. Most recently, I have focused on progress monitoring as it relates to a response to intervention model. Specifically, my interest is in using curriculum-based measurement as the dominant progress monitoring method.
I teach both on-campus and online courses and have found that teaching online can not only be challenging, but also rewarding. I enjoy and value the various perspectives of students in online courses who come from all over the country, as well as from other countries. My philosophy of teaching can be summarized in my favorite quote: "students don't care what you know until they know you care."
