Alpha Kappa Delta

The International Honor Society for Sociology

Alpha Kappa Delta is the international honor society for Sociology. The beginning of AKD can be traced to Dr. Emory Bogardus at the University of Southern California, when, in 1920, he proposed the formation of a society for students to share their research projects with faculty and other students for suggestions and criticisms. In 1921, Dr. Bogardus invited students and faculty at select institutions around the United States to join AKD. The Alpha Chapter of AKD was established at the University of North Dakota in 1964 and continues to participate in the AKD community of scholars.. There are currently over 53,000 scholars world-wide who have been initiated into AKD and there are chapters located around the world.

Sociology majors who are at least a junior, who maintain a GPA of 3.0 in Sociology courses at UND, and who have completed at least four regular courses on a regular grade basis are eligible to join Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society.

Graduate students who have completed one semester of study at UND with a GPA of 3.0 or better and who continue to work for their graduate degree are eligible to join Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honor Society.

The UND chapter of AKD initiates qualified students into AKD each spring. Students are also encouraged to be actively involved in the Sociology Club activities sponsored by the department.
