Admission Requirements

Completion of a minimum of twenty semester hours of undergraduate sociology or related fields with an overall grade point average of 3.00 (A=4.0), a GPA of at least 3.25 for the last two years of undergraduate study; and 3.25 GPA in their major.

Approved status presupposes some undergraduate training in methods of social research, statistics, social psychology, and sociological theory with a minimum grade of B in each.

Three letters of recommendation from faculty members familiar with the applicant's academic qualifications.

Three examples of written work.

Application Essay: Applicants shall answer the following questions in their application for admission essay. The essay shall be written in essay format, any references cited in the body and in the bibliography shall be in ASA format, and it shall be free of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax errors. (This essay is be used instead of the personal statement discussed on the Graduate Application instructions page): 

1. How would you define sociology to someone who does not know anything about sociology? What is unique about sociology? (We want your own personal understanding of sociology.)
2. Why do you want to be a sociologist instead of a psychologist or an anthropologist?
3. What more do you want to know about sociology that would make you a good sociologist? Why do you think that the UND graduate program in sociology would help you to accomplish this?
4. What do you want to do with your MA in sociology?

Application Deadline: All applications received by March 31st will be considered for funding.
