The Challenge (excerpted from Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future (2007)
Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy (COSEPUP)
"The US system of public education must lay the foundation for developing a workforce that is literate in mathematics and science, among other subjects. It is the creative intellectual energy of our workforce that will drive successful innovation and create jobs for all citizens. Without basic scientific literacy, adults cannot participate effectively in a world increasingly shaped by science and technology. Without a flourishing scientific and engineering community, young people are not motivated to dream of “what can be,” and they will have no motivation to become the next generation of scientists and engineers who can address persistent national problems, including national and homeland security, healthcare, the provision of energy, the preservation of the environment, and the growth of the economy, including the creation of jobs."
Our engineering school's
K-12 outreach can play a role in cultivating a lasting love for engineering, science, technology, and math in a student. These programs can help make engineering cool, exciting, and accessible when it matters most—the years when students can really develop an interest they will then
pursue in higher education.
Go to the links on the left to find some exciting opportunties for K-12 students, teachers and parents to visit our engineering school, get involved with UND engineering students and faculty, learn about engineering through cool experiments and activities, and participate in regional and national engineering competitions.
