The School of Engineering and Mines
The UND School of Engineering and Mines has degree programs in engineering and geological sciences. Fully accredited engineering BS degrees are offered in civil, chemical, electrical, geological and mechanical engineering, with undergraduate program concentrations in computer science and aviation in certain disciplines. Graduate programs offer MS degrees in civil, chemical, electrical, environmental, geological and mechanical engineering, and in geology, and PhD degrees in engineering and geology. The School emphasizes its teaching mission while supporting a wide variety of innovative research in the areas of sustainable energy, distance learning, aerospace payload development, remote sensing, engineered surfaces, and hydrogen fuel cell technologies.
How you can support the School of Engineering and Mines
In order to advance our mission to educate students, promote experiential and team-based learning, and engage in research, we have established the following priority needs:
Expanded Student Learning Opportunities
To achieve our mission of providing excellent experiential learning, the school must not only provide the best classroom instruction but be able to complement it with opportunities to use the newest technologies, participate in exciting interdisciplinary design projects, and have opportunities to participate in regional student professional society conferences (i.e. AEG, AIChE, ASCE, ASME, AUG, IEEE, SWE and TBP) and collegiate competitions such as steel bridge, concrete canoe, American Solar Challenge, etc. Funds would be made available to update equipment, support student organizations, and fund design projects.
Student Scholarships
The constant increase cost of tuition and fees required to obtain an engineering degree has resulted in many students needing to work part or full-time jobs in order to afford an education. Engineering students have a considerable amount of classroom work, design projects, and reports to complete. Time outside the classroom and lab can be very limited. The school has several scholarships, but not enough to meet the needs of our current student body. Additional scholarship dollars will also assist us in our efforts to increase our recruitment of talented students. View a list of existing scholarship endowments you can support or learn how you can create your own scholarship endowment.
Faculty and Student Research
Engineering faculty engage in research and scholarly activities that contribute basic and applied discovery to enhance knowledge and facilitate graduate and undergraduate student learning. The school’s plan is to build research clusters to utilize the expertise and experience of the faculty, together with the unique opportunities afforded by the UND campus and region, in developing nationally recognized research programs in areas including renewable and environmentally friendly energy, unmanned aerial vehicles, remote sensing and surface technologies. Funds would be used to support development of project funding requests, faculty development, networking, consultations, dissemination of findings, and ongoing project support and development.
Facilities
Leonard Hall is the oldest building, in the school's complex dedicated October, 1965.
Upson I and Upson II were constructed in 1972. Since that time only minor modifications to the existing engineering complex have been made. The School needs to accommodate increased research activity, provide up-to-date classroom and lab technologies, expand faculty, staff, and student working and studying spaces.
To help the school meet these increasing needs on October 17, 2008 the University dedicated the Jodsaas Center for Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurship. This center was made possible with a generous gift from alumnus Larry Jodsaas, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, 1962. The purpose of the Center is to develop interdisciplinary curriculum, programming and outreach opportunities for faculty and students related to leadership and entrepreneurship.
