College Advisement Instructions

Academic advisement is mandatory for all freshmen, new transfer students, and all students in the School of Engineering and Mines. Students must meet with their academic adviser prior to registering on UND CampusConnection. If you do not know the name of your adviser, please contact the Dean's office of your college. Students who have not declared a major will be advised by the Office of Student Academic Services.

Graduate School

Graduate Students are eligible to enroll for 500-level courses except for the following restrictions:

1. Restricted to major or department (student will need the department’s approval on the registration action form)
2. 996 Continuing Enrollment (student will need the department call number)
3. 997 Independent Study or 998 Thesis (Master’s students only)
4. 999 Dissertation (Doctoral students only)

Undergraduate Students - Seniors will be allowed to register for 500-level graduate courses on the following conditions:

1. Seniors who do not want to use 500-level courses for graduate credit will need the signature of the Graduate Dean and the department on a Registration Action Form.
2. Seniors who do want to use 500-level courses for graduate credit need to fill out the form titled “PETITION FOR GRADUATE CREDIT AS AN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT” which can be obtained at the Graduate School or downloaded from the web site at www.graduateschool.und.edu. All conditions must be met as stated on this form. Also, a Registration Action Form must be submitted with this petition.

Those who have a bachelor’s degree should enroll as a graduate non-degree student by completing a Graduate School Admission application for non-degree status. Students can apply on-line at graduateschool.und.edu. Any courses taken in undergraduate status cannot be used for graduate credit.

Aerospace Sciences

All students majoring or minoring in any of the Aviation, Atmospheric Sciences, Computer Science, Earth System Science & Policy, or Space Studies curricula are strongly encouraged to consult with their assigned faculty adviser for academic advising. Several courses in each department have enforced prerequisites. Consequently, it is very important that students carefully plan their academic schedule with accurate information.

Students should initially check with their adviser concerning essential studeis requirements, transfer credit, and departmental or major requirements. Flight Labs are available through crewlink.aero.und.edu, one day after you have registreed in CampusConnection. It is the responsibility of the student to individually work out his/her own schedule of classes. Check with John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences Student Services, Room 259, Odegard Hall, 777-4934, for specific advising questions during the registration period.

Arts and Sciences

It is strongly recommended that all students in the College of Arts and Sciences meet with an adviser prior to registration each semester. Students are responsible for learning the degree requirements of their program of study. Advisers can assist students in choosing courses to meet the General Education Requirements, review departmental, school, and college requirements and can also assist in planning class schedules for several semesters in advance.

Business and Public Administration

1. The Office of Academic Advisement (OAA) handles all registration questions and activities concerning BPA courses. To avoid errors in registration, BPA students are strongly encouraged to have their course schedules reviewed by OAA prior to registration by UND CampusConnection. The college has a number of policies concerning course progression requirements, grading, prerequisites, etc., that are strictly enforced. OAA is located in Gamble Hall, room 127, 777-2975.

2. Non-BPA students intending to register in 300-, 400- and 500-level BPA courses must have manual registration materials approved by OAA prior to processing by the registrar.

3. BPA students who are on probation will be required to meet with an OAA Academic Adviser prior to registration. There will be an adviser hold placed on the student that precludes them from using the UND CampusConnection system.

4. Early registration procedures allow students to enroll in BPA courses prior to verifying their eligibility. Students who are later found to be ineligible will normally be administratively dropped from these courses. Questions concerning administrative drops should be directed to OAA for clarification.

College of Education and Human Development

The College of Education and Human Development strongly urges all students to seek early advisement from their academic adviser before registering for classes. Departments in the College are Counseling Psychology and Community Services(CPCS), Educational Foundations and Research (EFR), Educational Leadership (EDL), Physical Education Exercise Science and Wellness(PXW), Recreation and Tourism Studies (RTS), Rehabilitation and Human Services (RHS), Social Work (SWk), and Teaching and Learning (T&L). Graduate students should seek advising from their graduate program adviser. If students are double majors they should be advised in both areas of study. Secondary education students should seek advisement from the Department of Teaching and Learning and also from their major adviser. The College has an undergraduate advisement office in room 105 of the Education Building, 777-3183.

Engineering and Mines

Advisement is required for all Engineering and Mines students before registering for classes.

1. Review departmental curriculum in your catalog and prepare a trial schedule and list of classes.
2. Meet with your assigned adviser, complete the registration form and have your adviser sign the completed form.
3. Submit a copy/photocopy of the signed registration form to your department office for placement in your file.
4. Only students who have met with their advisers and submitted a copy/photocopy of their signed registration form will be permitted to register.

Nursing

Students changing their majors should do so two weeks prior to their assigned registration time to avoid delays.

Academic advisement is mandatory for all pre-nursing and nursing majors. Students in the College of Nursing must meet with their assigned academic adviser prior to registering via the UND CampusConnection registration system. If you do not know the name of your assigned academic adviser, please call the Student Affairs Area of the College of Nursing at 777-4174 or inquire on the UND CampusConnection. Advisers’ schedules during early registration periods are generally posted on their doors. To make an appointment sign up on your adviser’s door at least 24 hours in advance or follow other instructions as posted. To receive the most accurate information, schedule your advisement appointment just prior to your assigned registration time. You should be prepared to meet with your academic adviser by working out a trial schedule of courses and an alternative list, in the event that your first choice courses are unavailable at the time you register. If unable to register in a course which is critical to your progression contact the department which offers the course or your adviser for information on how to proceed.

Cooperative Education - Nurs 397: Special Permission is required to register in this course. Advance notice is normally required, as students must interview for positions. Contact Kris Stellon, College of Nursing, at 701-777-2403 for further information.

Check with your adviser or the instructor for information on any course listed as "Department Consent Required."

If you have special circumstances which cannot be resolved by telephone, please contact your adviser or go to the College of Nursing Admissions and Records Office, Room 308.

Students who register for courses having prerequisites, but who have not completed those prerequisites by the first day of class, may be dropped from all courses for which prerequisites have not been completed.

Nursing labs and clinicals generally do meet the first week of classes. Nursing students should check bulletin boards in the Nursing building for further information on and/or changes in courses.

Nutrition and Dietetics

Academic advisement is mandatory for all students enrolled in majors within the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics. If you do not know the name of your academic adviser, call the Department office at 777-2539. Review the curriculum for your major and develop a list of classes in which you plan to enroll. Develop a trial schedule for these courses. Make an appointment to meet with your adviser prior to your assigned registration time. During that meeting, your adviser will provide call numbers for any courses that are listed without one. After receiving your adviser’s approval, the UND CampusConnection or on-site registration may be used to complete the process.

(Deciding Students)

Academic advisement for students who have not declared a major is very important as it provides an opportunity to discuss educational/career plans as well as appropriate course selection. It is important that students make an appointment to meet with an academic adviser well in advance of the scheduled time to register. Students should prepare to meet with their academic adviser by thinking about educational goals and courses for the upcoming semester.
