Master of Science in Physics

The Master of Science program provides the students with basic physics courses at the graduate level and an introduction to research. Core courses include methods of theoretical physics, classical mechanics, classical theory of electricity and magnetism, and quantum mechanics. The degree program requires completion of a research project and the writing of a thesis.

Program Requirements

The M.S. program, designed to provide the student with basic physics courses at the graduate level and an introduction to research, requires:

  1. Successful completion of a basic core of courses which includes: classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, methods of theoretical physics, classical electricity and magnetism.
  2. Completion of a research project and the writing of a thesis.

Admission Requirements

  1. Completion of a minimum of 21 semester credits of undergraduate physics, plus mathematics through differential equations or the equivalent. Course work should include intermediate courses in mechanics, electricity and magnetism, optics, thermal physics, and modern quantum physics. Adequate preparation in general chemistry also is necessary.
  2. The overall undergraduate grade point average must be 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale), or 3.00 for the last two years.
  3. An applicant without satisfactory undergraduate training may be admitted to the program, but will be required to remove deficiencies by completing the necessary undergraduate courses without receiving graduate credit for them.
