Education

  • Ed.D. and M.S.  from Arizona State University with an emphasis in Fitness/ Wellness Education and Exercise Psychology
  • B.A. in Social Sciences from the Open University (UK)
  • Teacher’s Certificate in Physical Education and Biology from Loughborough University (UK)
  • Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, and a Fellow of the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance

Research Interests

Exercise psychology, primarily in applications of motivation theory to physical activity, and in understanding how physical self-perceptions relate to motivation and to health and wellness.  Physical education curriculum, especially as it relates to the lifetime promotion of physical activity as a key health-promoting behavior.

Profile

Dr. Whitehead taught physical education for 13 years at the middle and high school level in the UK before going to graduate school in the USA and becoming a university professor.  He competed for six years as a member of the UK national track and field team prior to coming to the USA.
