Financial
Aid and Scholarships
Q:
What Financial Aid is available to me if I study
abroad?
A:If
you are an eligible student and are enrolled
at least half time in a UND program, you will
be able to receive most forms of federal, state,
and University-controlled financial aid. Some
grants and most University scholarships are
available only if you are full-time.
Q:
I have not yet applied for financial aid; what
do I need to do to be considered?
A:To be considered for any type of financial
aid, you must first complete the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Financial
Aid Office at UND will receive the results of
the FAFSA electronically and use that information
to determine your eligibility for any financial
aid programs. UND has a financial aid priority
deadline of April 15 for enrolled students to
receive federal campus-based aid for the following
academic year (which begins with fall term).
A student whose financial aid application is
processed after April 15 will usually be limited
to consideration for only Federal Pell Grants,
Federal Stafford Loans, Parents Loan and Private
Commercial Loans. It is important to file an
appeal with Financial Aid if you are studying
abroad. This is necessary as financial aid packages
are awarded to students based on standard budgets.
By filing the appeal, you may request that your
standard budget be increased by the amount of
your additional expenses. The Director of International
Programs can supply you with a letter itemizing
your expenses after you have been accepted to
the program. Expenses that are typically included
on the appeal form are the program fee, airfare
to and from your destination, room, board, and
any other necessary costs.
Q:
I am currently receiving financial aid. Do I
qualify for more since my expenses will be greater?
A:If
you have already applied for or are receiving
financial aid, you may be eligible for more
financial assistance. Because study abroad is
more expensive, you may want to submit a copy
of the letter from the Director of International
Programs itemizing your expenses to the Student
Financial Aid Office. Speak with a representative
at the Student Financial Aid Office to determine
if you would have any additional eligibility
if you appeal. It is important to note that
the additional eligibility in almost all cases
is only in the form of Federal Stafford Loans
(Subsidized, Unsubsidized, Parent PLUS Loans
or Commercial Education Loans) awarded by the
University. Grants are awarded on the basis
of a student's (and parents') ability to contribute,
not the cost of education. It is only your budget
that could be changed by studying abroad.
Q:How
far ahead of my planned departure date do I
need to apply for financial aid?
A:It
is best to notify the Student Financial Aid
Office before the academic year in which you
will be studying abroad. This enables the Office
to award the aid on the most accurate budget
and increase your opportunities for aid. If
you do not become aware of the study abroad
opportunity until after you have already received
a financial aid award notice, it is important
to contact a financial aid representative as
soon as possible to determine if you have any
options to change your financial aid eligibility
for the semester in which you will have the
additional costs.
Q:Am
I eligible for financial aid if I attend a non-UND
study abroad program?
A:Yes,
you must register for A&S 290 or another equivalent
course and contact the Student Financial Aid
Office to submit an appeal of your additional
expenses.
Q:How
do I receive my financial aid?
A:If
you are still on campus, you will pick up your
financial aid during regularly scheduled financial
aid disbursement.
If
you have already departed for your study abroad
before disbursements are scheduled to begin, you
should contact the UND Business Office (701.777.3911)
to arrange for direct deposit or the mailing of
financial aid checks.
