Education
Faculty
and Courses at ACN (freshman year)
Every semester ACN offers a variety of classes
to accommodate both American and Norwegian students.
Two of the classes taught every semester are Norwegian
101; (with opportunities to take 102 or an upper
level language when applicable) for the Americans
and English Composition 110 and 120 (for both
Americans and Norwegians). Most of the courses
transfer to the University of North Dakota (UND)
as General Education Requirements (G.E.R.).
Courses
such as: Psychology, Sociology, Art, History,
International Business, Philosophy, Public Speaking
and History are offered according to the area
of expertise of the visiting American professors
and the availability of instructors from the immediate
area. In the past, the American Embassy has provided
additional faculty with backgrounds in diverse
subject areas. This provides the students with
quality instructors with a wealth of international
experience. Other instructors are natives of Moss
or from the area with a background in education
or teaching experience at the University of Oslo
or ¯stfold College.
Class
attendance is mandatory at ACN. The school system
is very comparable to the American university
system. However, the classes are much smaller
allowing for more student-teacher interaction.
The
classes consist of both lectures and group work
with many opportunities for Norwegian and American
students to work together. Many students have
remarked that they like working in these groups
and have learned more because of it. "You gain
a much better understanding of the difference
between the two cultures when you study and work
side-by-side with students from another country.
It is much easier to understand their viewpoint
if you understand how they think and why they
do things the way that they do."
