Applying to SIL-UND

All students wishing to take courses at SIL-UND (including those enrolled at UND during the regular school year) should complete an application to SIL-UND each year (see details below) so that we know they are planning to attend and so they may receive important information and updates before the summer session begins. Application to take SIL-UND courses is made directly to SIL, not to the University of North Dakota.

Applying to the SIL-UND program is not the same as applying to the Master's program in linguistics at UND. It is not necessary to enter the Master's program in order to take SIL courses. Those SIL students who are also interested in a Master's degree should make separate application for the degree program to the UND Graduate School; this may be done after the first summer of SIL attendance.

Requirements for admission to take SIL-UND courses

  • two years of college or university study before the summer begins
  • 2.8 GPA or higher
  • sufficient command of English to study at the university level

Exceptions are sometimes made to these requirements; to request an exception, contact the SIL-UND Director.

Application procedure and fees

The application process has two stages. The initial (stage 1) application, which is done through an online form (see link below), is focused on information that helps determine your eligibility for the program.

After we notify you that your application has been accepted, we will ask you to complete a second form (stage 2) which requests information about housing, child care, and other practical matters that will help us prepare for your arrival. A non-refundable application fee of $25 is required at that time, as well as a housing deposit of $100 per adult if you want to live in the dormitory (refundable before May 1). During stage 2, most students must also submit one or more forms to UND.

International students must complete a few extra requirements. These include: demonstration of English proficiency prior to acceptance, certification of sufficient funds to cover the costs of the program, and (in some cases) submission of transcripts of undergraduate work. These are detailed in the application forms and in instructions that you will receive later. In order to allow enough time to complete these requirements (including delays in mailing things back and forth), international students must begin the application process earlier than most U.S. students (see application dates below).
