Exact Subject | Keywords
from Subject | Browsing Subject Headings
Use the Exact Subject search when you know at least the first four words
of the subject heading for your topic. You can search by Library of Congress
Subject Headings and by other subject schemes such as Sears and MeSH. If
you aren't sure of the subject heading, or don't find what you want using
this search, try the Keywords from Subject search.

How to Search
- Select the Subject Heading, exact radio button from the basic
search screen
or select Subject Heading, exact from the drop-down menu on the
advanced search screen.
- Enter the first 4 words of the subject heading. Your search
will include any subject headings that begin with those 4 words.
- Use truncation and wild cards for spelling
variations.
- You can use punctuation, but you don't need to.
- You can use upper or lower case.

Use the Keywords from Subject search when you know some words from the subject
heading for your topic or if you want all subject headings that contain
certain words.
How to Search
- Select the Subject Heading, keyword radio button from the basic
search screen
or select Subject Heading, keyword from the drop-down menu on
the advanced search screen.
- Enter one or more words from the subject heading. Your search will
find all items that have these keywords in any subject heading. Keywords
may not all be in the same subject heading.
- Do not include these words: by, for, in, of, on, to, the.
- Use truncation and wild cards for spelling
variations.
- Use boolean operators AND, OR, NOT
to combine words.
- You can use upper or lower case.

You can view a list of subject headings before and after a search term in
the alphabet.
How to Browse
- Select the Browse the Index radio button on the advanced search
screen.
- Select Subject Heading, exact from the drop-down menu.
- Enter the first 4 words of the subject heading.
- You can use punctuation, but you don't need to.
