   Truncation | Wildcards

If you don't know the exact spelling of a word, or if you are interested in searching for more than one spelling, use truncation and wildcards.

Truncation

Use the pound sign # to substitute one or more letters at the end of a word or for one or more words at the end of a phrase.

Examples

Enter:
To search for words or phrases that start the same:  
theat# theater
theatre
theatrical
encyclop# encyclopaedia
encyclopedia
calculus of variations # Calculus of variations
Calculus of variations with applications
Calculus of variations and partial differential equations of the first order

Wildcards

Use the question mark ? to substitute for one letter or one word. You can use more than question mark if you are unsure of more than one letter or word.

Enter:
To search for words or phrases like:  
ceramic? ceramic
ceramics
wom?n woman
women
once ? a time once was a time
once upon a time
