Library Receives Wireless Network Upgrade
--------------------------------------------------
The Chester Fritz Library has recently benefited from campus funding for wireless network upgrades. New equipment has been installed and the number of wireless access points has doubled in the facility. The upgrade now supports wireless coverage throughout the building. UND’s Information Technology Systems and Services Department planned the upgrade and completed the work during February.
Students, faculty and staff with wireless capability in their laptop computers, may use them in the Library to access the University’s network. Anyone may connect to the network as a guest, which allows the user to browse the Internet. However, to receive full access, the user must log onto the University network using software which can be downloaded during the connection process.
The Chester Fritz Library also has a limited number of laptop computers, which students may checkout to use inside the facility. The computers are loaded with MS Office and printing is available through UnipriNT. The laptops are available at the First Floor Service Desk
Most libraries on campus have or are installing wireless access. The Geology Library in Leonard Hall recently deployed a new wireless area and the Hughes Fine Arts Center, where the Music Library is located, is in the process of installing a wireless network. The Health Sciences and the Law libraries also operate wireless networks for their users.
For more information, access the Library’s website at http://www.library.und.edu/services/wireless.jsp

ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Database
--------------------------------------------------
The ProQuest Digital Dissertations (PQDD) database is changing to a new name. The database will now be ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Database (PQDT) and will move to the ProQuest search platform. ProQuest Digital Dissertations will be discontinued along with the old PQDD search platform.
The new ProQuest platform offers some advantages. One can now cross-search between PQ Disserations and Theses and other ProQuest databases. The ProQuest platform offers citation software support for RefWorks and EndNote and immediate PDF downloading (no PIN required). The multi-language interface allows users to search in their native language. The researcher may also set up emailed search alerts that notify the subscribing user when new material in their chosen fields is added to PQDT database.
If you have additional questions or need more information please contact Reference & Research Sevices at 777-4629, or email us at library@mail.und.edu.

Traveling Bus Exhibit
--------------------------------------------------
Traveling Bus Exhibit Tells Unknown Story of German-American Civilian Internment in the United States during World War II
Did you know that during WWII the U.S. Government interned 15,000 German-American civilians? "Vanished, German-American Internment 1941-1948," describes this little known event in U.S. history through a unique multimedia exhibit.Vanished is a traveling exhibit housed in a bus that will visit Grand Forks on September 15, 2006, from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The BUS-eum as it is called will be parked at the corner of University Avenue and Harvard Street on the campus of the University of North Dakota. The public is invited to tour the exhibit during its stop at UND.
"Vanished" is presented by TRACES, a St. Paul, Minnesota based non-profit educational organization that collects and publicizes stories about Germans and Austrians in the Midwest during World War II. The exhibit's visit to Grand Forks is sponsored by the University of North Dakota Chester Fritz Library.
The U.S. internment of German-Americans is a little known historical event in U.S. history. A United States government policy forced thousands of German-Americans and Latin American Germans into camps where they were confined for the duration of the war. The exhibit has particular relevance to North Dakota which housed a German-American internment detention center outside of Bismarck. Detention centers were located across the county and included sites in Wisconsin and Texas. Ellis Island, recognized as the entry point for U.S. immigration was also a site for a German-American detention center.
People will have the opportunity to view information about the U.S. Government's WWII "enemy alien" internment program through ten narrative panels, a NBC "Dateline" documentary and a 1945 U.S. Government color film. The exhibit will stimulate viewers to ask questions about U.S. detention policies and the history of World War II.
For information about the exhibit, contact Wilbur Stolt, Director of Libraries at the University of North Dakota Chester Fritz Library. He may be reached at 701-777-2189. |

The Chester Fritz Library is pleased
to announce access to ARTstor,
a digital resource containing thousands
of images of art work, architecture
and design and archaeological objects.
This digital resource will provide the
UND community with a wide range of visual
materials for teaching and research with
usefulness across many disciplines.
ARTstor has been developed from several
source collections and is a product of
collaborations among libraries, museums,
photographic archives, publishers, slide
libraries, and individual scholars. In
its ongoing efforts to add to the collection,
ARTstor is working with major art museums
who have agreed to share their collections
for noncommercial scholarly use. ARTstor
also includes the electronic tools to
use the images online, while providing
the necessary restricted usage environment
that balances the rights of content providers
with the needs and interests of the content
users.
The Chester Fritz Library is a Charter
Member of ARTstor, a non-profit organization
originally developed with funding from
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. It is
composed of libraries and museums dedicated
to making art images and associated data
available for education and scholarship.
Funding for UND's participation in ARTstor
was made possible by the Colonel Eugene

The Chester Fritz Library will replace
carpet on the First Floor, West Wing
beginning November 1, 2004. Preparation
work will begin on October 27th, and all
work is expected to be completed by November
8th. During the past summer, a water pipe
broke causing carpet damage in the Government
Documents and Periodicals area on the
First Floor. While no Library resources
were damaged, the carpet was covered with
oily water. Residue in the carpet could
not be removed and new carpet is being
installed in the damaged areas. Government
Documents, Patent and Trademarks, and
Periodicals will be open and accessible
during the project, but some doors to
the First Floor, West Wing will be temporarily
closed during the work. Signs will
be posted directing people to the appropriate
stairway. The Library appreciates
everyone's cooperation during the carpet
installation project.

Special Message to the University
Community:
The Chester Fritz Library is in the process
of switching to a new computer system
during the Fall Semester 2004.
The reason for the change is to replace
computer software that will not be supported
in the future. The goal of this project
is to introduce more advanced computer
technology that will enhance all Library
services.
During the next few months, you
may see Library staff taking extra steps
in checking out books. There may be some
services such as online renewals that
will not be available. You may also
find due dates are extended to
accommodate project activities. The current
Online Public Catalog will not change
during the Fall Semester, and the Library
will deliver materials to the stacks as
quickly as possible during the implementation
of the new system. However, there may
be some delays in processing some materials.
There should not be any disruption in
accessing electronic databases or e-journals.
The new computer software and hardware
will provide improved tools for both Library
staff and users. We look forward to introducing
the new "gateway" to the Public
Catalog by the beginning of the Spring
Semester 2005.
This project is separate from the ConnectND/PeopleSoft
project, which is also being implemented
at UND. The new computer system will be
operated by the Online Dakota Information
Network (ODIN), which supports all North
Dakota University System libraries and
selected public, school and special libraries
throughout the State.
The goal during the next few months
is to implement the new Library computer
system with as little inconvenience to
the user as possible. The Library
staff would like to thank you in advance
for your assistance during the implementation.
If you have any questions about the project,
please contact me at 777-2189.

The Institute of Physics Publishing (IOP)
online journal archive collection was
recently acquired by the Chester Fritz
Library.
The IOP journal archive provides perpetual
access to the complete collection of older
IOP journals, nearly 60 unique journal
titles in all. Online access is available
to all of these titles through 1993 at
present. For a smaller group of 24 journals
access is available after 1993 for the
latest ten years. The journal articles
published during the latest year are transferred
to the archive at the end of the year.
The archive will continue to grow in this
way each year, with an online gap of no
more that one year.
The Chester Fritz Library subscribes
individually to four IOP journals, Journal
of Physics A: Mathematical and General,
Journal
of Physics B: Atomic, Molecular and Optical
Physics, Journal
of Physics: Condensed Matter, and
European
Journal of Physics. The most recent
issues of these four titles are always
available online.
The IOP online journals can be accessed
at Chester Fritz Library (http://www.library.und.edu)
by browsing through the electronic
journal collection, or from the Institute
of Physics Electronic Journal service
(http://www.iop.org/EJ/search).

The Chester Fritz Library offers a new
package of databases beginning July
1, 2004. The Chester Fritz Library
participated in a three-state project
to negotiate the new database package,
which will provide online resources to
academic, public and school libraries
in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Databases are changing because contracts
for some of the current databases end
on June 30, 2004. The following EBSCO
databases will replace some of the
Gale/Infotrac databases:
- Academic
Search Premier
Academic Search Premier contains
indexing for nearly 8,050 publications,
with full text for more than 4,600 of
those titles. PDF backfiles to 1975 or
earlier are available for well over one
hundred journals, and searchable references
are provided for more than 1,000 titles.
Academic Search Premier contains unmatched
full text coverage in biology, chemistry,
education, engineering, humanities, physics,
psychology, religion & theology, sociology,
and other academic fields. This database
will replace Expanded Academic, Health
Reference Center Academic, and General
Reference Center Gold.
- Business
Source Premier and Regional
Business News
Provides indexing and abstracts for more
than twice as many active, peer-reviewed,
business related journals as any other
database. Business Source® Premier
offers indexing and abstracts for the
350 most important scholarly journals
back to 1965 or the first published issue.
This database includes searchable references
for more than 1,170 journals. Journal
ranking studies reveal that Business Source
Premier is the overwhelmingly superior
database for full text journals in all
disciplines of business, including marketing,
management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance,
econometrics and economics. Regional Business
News provides comprehensive full text
for regional business publications (including
titles from Crain Communications). This
database has full text for more than 60
sources. These databases will replace
Business and Company Resource Center and
General Business File ASAP.
- MasterFILE

The University of North Dakota Chester
Fritz Library will celebrate National
Library Week April 18-24 with special
recognition of the 35th Anniversary of
the North Dakota Joint Regional Depository
program. This anniversary marks 35 years
of cooperation between the University
of North Dakota Libraries and North Dakota
State University Libraries in providing
access to United States government publications.
The U.S. Federal Depository System was
originally established by Congress in
the early 1800s to insure that the American
public would have access to government
information. UND was designated a Depository
Library in 1890 and North Dakota State
University Library became a Depository
Library in 1907. During the early years,
each library collected a portion of the
government documents published annually,
but there was no coordination of which
institution in the state collected what
government publications.
In 1968 the two university libraries joined
together to form a Joint Regional Depository
for government documents. This cooperative
initiative by the two libraries insured
access to more government publications
to the citizens of North Dakota. Today,
the UND and NDSU libraries collect and
provide access to government publications
in paper, microform and electronic formats.
The 35th Anniversary of the Joint
Regional Depository program is a milestone
for our two libraries. They have cooperated
for many years to bring information to
the students, faculty and staff at the
two universities and to the citizens of
North Dakota, said Wilbur Stolt,
Director of Libraries at UND. This
program allows us to offer access to more
government information than we could individually.
The Joint Federal Depository Program is
open to all citizens of North Dakota.
Library staff at both universities are
available to help people with their questions
and research needs. A special shuttle
system moves government documents between
the two libraries on a daily basis during
the week. People in Grand Forks can order
documents housed in Fargo and they will
usually be available for examination within
a few days. The Joint Regional Depository
Library is located on the First Floor
of the Chester Fritz Library. More information
about the program can be found at the
Chester Fritz Librarys web site:
http://www.library.und.edu/coll/govdocs/index.jsp.

The Elwyn B. Robinson Department of Special
Collections has completed a major database
project, the conversion of the Dakota
Student card catalog index to an online,
searchable Oracle database. The Dakota
Student index searches back to the newspaper's
very first 1888 issue. Special Collections
maintained the old card catalog index
and will continue to maintain the new
database, which searches keywords and
can be limited by year or a range of years.
Search results include subject, description,
and citation information; these are alphabetized
first by subject, and then chronologically.
Special Collections has a copy of each
Dakota Student issue on microfilm. The
database may be searched at:

The Chester Fritz Library has increased
online journal access for students, faculty
and staff at UND. Journals published online
by the American
Chemical Society (ACS) are now available
through computers linked to UND. Over
30 current titles and backfiles can be
searched and read online. Backfiles for
some journals go back as far as 1879.
The Chester Fritz Library also offers
online access to over 250 online titles
published by Reed Elsevier Publishers
through their ScienceDirect
journal database. Information includes
articles from the current year plus four
years of backfiles for most of titles.
Through the UND network, faculty and students
can access current Reed-Elsevier subscriptions
supported by the Chester Fritz Library,
the Harley E. French Library of the Health
Sciences and the EERC Library.
The UND Libraries have converted most
of their print subscriptions for the above
mentioned titles to electronic subscriptions.
The objective of the change is to enhance
and expand access to these significant
research journals. Individual titles may
be searched through the Chester Fritz
Library webpage or multiple titles may
be searched through the ACS and ScienceDirect
databases.
Online access to these journal packages
has been made possible through group purchase
arrangements negotiated by MINITEX, an
organization composed of libraries in
North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.
Access to the journals is available through
the Chester Fritz Library webpage: http://www.library.und.edu/
Questions about materials offered by
the Chester Fritz Library may be directed
to Reference and Research Services, 777-4629.

the Popular Reading Collection |
-----------------------------------
-----------------------------------
The Chester
Fritz Library with the support of the
Student Government has established a new
Popular Reading Collection offering the
best in modern fiction and biography.
The Collection is funded through
a special allocation from the 2001/02 Student
Government. The idea for the Collection was developed
by Student Senator, Nick Wangler, who authored
a bill in the Student Senate to allocate
funding for the acquisition of novels for
recreational reading. Senator Wangler, a strong supporter of reading,
said "Recreational reading is a doorway
to higher learning."
The purpose of the collection is to provide
literature not associated with a particular
academic program, but of interest to recreational
reading interests.
The Library has targeted the best
in modern fiction including award winners
from many genres including Mystery, Western,
Science Fiction, Romance, and biography. Library bibliographers are reviewing many
notable book and best seller lists, current
press releases and special interest information
when selecting books for the Collection. They will be ordering books throughout the
year to add to the Collection.
The Collection is expected to grow
to over 600 books by the Spring Semester.
"We appreciate the Student Government's
interest in supporting this collection of
books," said Wilbur Stolt, Director of
Libraries.
"It is a wonderful supplement to
the Library's research collections." Additional novels and biographies given as
gifts to the Library will also be added
to the Collection in the future.
Information about individual books in the
Collection is available through the Library's
online catalog. The books are located on
new shelving recently installed in the Reading
Room. They may be previewed in the Reading
Room and checked out for personal use.
-----------------------------------
-----------------------------------
The Current
Contents Search database is now accessible
via the Internet to all faculty and students
including remote users of the UND libraries.
Expanded access to the database is made
available through funding from the Chester
Fritz Library and the Harley
E. French Library of the Health Sciences
and through funding provided by Vice President
of Academic Affairs and Provost John Ettling
to support the Biomedical
Research Information Network (BRIN)
grant program. A link to the Current Contents
database is available on the Chester Fritz
Library and Library of the Health Sciences
web pages.
Current Contents Search delivers tables
of contents and bibliographic data from
over 7,000 of the world's leading scientific
and scholarly journals and 2,000 books.
The information in the database dates back
to 1996 publications and covers disciplines
in the sciences, social sciences, arts,
and humanities.
Indexed subject areas include agriculture,
biology, and environmental sciences; arts
and humanities; clinical medicine/ engineering,
computing, and technology; life sciences;
physical, chemical, and Earth sciences;
and social and behavioral sciences.
Current Contents Search provides users
with up-to-date research information. Each
journal meets stringent qualitative and
quantitative standards such as impact factor,
timeliness, depth and breadth of coverage,
and editorial integrity. Complete bibliographic
information is provided, including English-language
author abstracts for most journal articles.
The publications may be searched by keywords.
The database provides additional information
including author keywords, reprint and research
addresses, and full journal information.
Contact the reference department at the
Chester Fritz Library or the Harley E. French
Library of the Health Sciences for additional
information about the Current Contents Search
database.
