MARC Code Lists : Organizations

The organization code file will be updated weekly to add newly-assigned codes and to integrate other changes. It can be searched by organization name or MARC code. Both valid and invalid codes are indexed. Access through variant names is also provided. Names originally in a script other than Latin are represented in Latin transliterated form only. The valid MARC code and name of the organization to which it applies appears in brief record(s) displayed in the results of search. A fuller labeled display can also be viewed which includes the organization's address, variant, regional and invalid codes, as well as other forms of name not shown in the brief display.

Search Tips:

    1. SEARCH BY A PHRASE WHEN SEARCHING BY NAME. It is best to enter a phrase containing at least one distinctive word (e.g.: "lincoln elementary school").
    2. DO NOT INCLUDE PUNCTUATION OR DIACRITICAL MARKS (i.e., accents etc.) that modify letters. Names are normalized during indexing to exclude punctuation and diacritical marks.
    3. SEARCHING IS NOT CASE SENSITIVE. You can search by code or name using either all lowercase letters, all uppercase letters, or a combination. The resulting hits will always include valid MARC organization code and primary name of the organization. More information about each organization is available by clicking on the "More on This Record" link.
    4. YOU CAN SEARCH BY CITY OR TOWN NAME ALONE. This can be used to retrieve all the codes for organizations in a particular place. Be careful! This is a powerful search that might result in thousands of hits. All organization names in the database are qualified by the city where the organization is located. The city is given in its English form if one is commonly used (e.g.: Rome, not Roma). City qualifiers are enclosed in parentheses at the end of the name. For U.S. cities, the qualifier includes the 2-letter U.S. Postal Service abbreviation for the state (e.g., "Dresden, OH"). For non-U.S. cities, the qualifier includes the name of the country in English as well (e.g., Munich, Germany).

NOTE: When the U.S. state is part of the organization's name, the state name is given in full (e.g., New York Supreme Court, Library (Kingston, NY)).

The organization codes are in a SiteSearch system database at the Library of Congress. They are accessed using a Z39.50 (Information Retrieval) gateway.
