Call Number and Spine Label Formats

 

Call Number Labels

  1. Labels should be placed on the spine when at all possible approximately two fingers up from the bottom.
  2. Labels should not cover important data such as abstract numbers, range of alphabet in the volumes, etc. Labels should be placed below any printing on bound volumes.
  3. Labels that cannot fit on the spine are to be placed in th upper left hand corner of the cover.
  4. Labels for Special Collections books with jackets are placed only on the mylar enclosing the jacket, not on the book.
  5. Periodical call numbers containing both voluming and dates have a space between the volume and the date [unless there is no room for the space].

  6. FINE ARTS parts with scores: Permanent label on parts with same call number as score. [No part indication is given]

Labeling Patent Microfilm

Use reduced type font; attach label to the front of the box with paste or a computer label.

      Example:

The reel number and date may be written in with pen or keyed on condensed computer label. These film are stored with the commercial label forward to read the patent numbers.

Script "L"

A note will be included with the book instructing that the "l" in the call number be replaced manually in pen with a script l on the label.
