SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the Maxwell Anderson Papers consists of production copies of two of Anderson's plays, The Masque of Kings and Key Largo. The Masque of Kings "…[provides] an answer for the mystery of January 30, 1889, when the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne was found with his young mistress shot to death in a hunting lodge at Mayerling, Austria" (Alfred S. Shivers, The Life of Maxwell Anderson). Key Largo is the story of King McCloud, an American soldier who takes part in the Spanish Civil, regrets leaving his men to die in Spain, but rectifies the situation by helping out one of his men's family.

The material was a part of the estate of the actress, Zita Johann. The donator's son was doing work on Johann's house and found the production copies. Biographical data on Johann is also included.
