SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This addition to the George S. Patton Papers consists of Buchenwald and Beyond, the published unit history for the 120th Evacuation Hospital. On April 15, 1945, General Patton ordered the hospital to be permanently stationed at Buchenwald Concentration Camp, to provide medical assistance for the 120,000 residents of the camp. One member of the 120th was Dr. J.H. Mahoney, who graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1940. After leaving UND, Mahoney graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, with an M.D. degree. Mahoney joined the 120th in April 1945, and served as a Captain.

Also included is a two page essay, “Memories of events while I served with the 120th Evacuation Unit,” by Dr. J.H. Mahoney. The essay recounts Mahoney’s experiences at Buchenwald.
