Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

BulletWho can have space on U-Web?
The purpose of the UND Student Web Server (U-Web) is to provide space for currently enrolled students to post resumes, portfolios, and to meet instructional needs. Please see the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for further information.
Bullet How do I access my web space?
In order to access your web space, you will need to have claimed your U-mail address (Claim your account at: http://idm.und.edu/idm/user). Once you have claimed your U-mail address, you can use FTP or SCP to access your U-web space using the same username and passphrase. Your name will show up in the U-web Directory of Student Web Pages after you access your space using FTP or SCP software.

Bullet What's my URL? How do I tell people to find my web pages?
The general format of the web addresses is http://uweb.und.nodak.edu/~your.userid. For example, student jw.doe's URL would be: http://uweb.und.nodak.edu/~jw.doe .

Bullet I'm concerned about my privacy, how do I prevent people from finding my pages by searching?
The student web pages listed on the Directory of Student Pages are indexed for searching. To prevent your web site from being searched, name your home page something other than index.html or index.htm

Bullet Why doesn't my home page come up? All I get is Forbidden message
The server requires that your home page file be named index.html or index.htm.
If you do not have a file by one of these names, please rename your initial page to index or enter the file name as part of the URL (e.g. uweb.und.nodak.edu/~j.doe/homepage.html).

Bullet How much space do I get?
The space allocated for each U-Web user is 30MB.

Bullet How long is my U-Web space active?
At this time, the same username is used for U-Web and U-mail. U-web space is available as long as you have an active U-mail account.

Bullet I've never created a web page before. How do I learn how?
There is an online tutorial on creating web pages using the Netscape Page Composer editor. This software is installed in the ITSS labs. You may access this tutorial by selecting the "Web Page Creation Documentation" on the U-Web home page. You are not required to use Netscape Page Composer, you may use any html editor. Please be aware that this server does not support Microsoft Front Page extensions.

Bullet What's this Disclaimer statement?
The following disclaimer statement will be included at the bottom of your web pages.
"The views and opinions expressed in this page are strictly those of the page author. The contents of this page have not been reviewed or approved by the University of North Dakota."

Bullet I have my web pages ready. How do I transfer them to my U-Web space?
FTP (file transfer protocol) or secure FTP (SCP) may be used to transfer files to your U-Web space. Documentation is included as the last topic of the on-line tutorial.
Jump to Publish information.

Bullet Why can't I telnet to my U-Web space?
The U-Web system does not work the way a typical UNIX-based web server works. There isn't a UNIX account associated with your space, therefore, telnet software does not work with this system.

Bullet I'm not a student, how do I get web space?
Faculty may request space for instructional web pages on the general UND web server (www.und.edu). Departments and student organizations should also request space on the general UND server. Others may wish to use free web hosting services on the Internet (e.g. tripod.com or geocities.com).
