Why is some of my mail
returned as undeliverable with a "We don't relay" message?
This message is
the result of security installed on the U-mail server. If you are sending
to a non-nodak.edu address AND you are using a 3rd Party ISP (e.g. AOL,
USWest, Infinet etc.) your mail will be returned to you with this message.
Due to a server upgrade in April, we now have additional work arounds if
you are using IMAP. Note: If you are dialing into UND's modem pool, or using
a computer on the campus network, this does not affect you.
- Configure your e-mail software
using the SMTP (outgoing server) of your ISP vs. und.nodak.edu. You
may need to check with your provider for this information (typically
it is the part after the @). Note: some ISP's (e.g. AOL) do not have
an SMTP.
- The following software
includes a feature to authenticate with the U-mail server which will
allow you to send mail to any address: Netscape Communicator (Messenger),
Outlook Express (Windows only), and Eudora 4.3. Instructions for setting
this feature follow.
- Netscape Communicator
- no setup in addition to configuring for U-mail is required.
- Outlook Express -
Windows - Select the Tools menu, then Accounts, click the
Mail tab, Select the Account, then click Properties. Once the Properties
window opens, choose the Servers tab, and check the box under Outgoing
Mail Server called "My server requires authentication" (if you click
the Settings button the option entitled "use same settings as my incoming
server" would typically be used).
- Eudora 4.3 - Windows
- Select the Tools menu, then Options, select the Category "Getting
Started" (or "Sending Mail"), be sure to check the "Allow Authentication"
checkbox.
- Eudora 4.3 - Macintosh
- Select the Special menu, then Settings. Choose the Category "Sending
Mail", be sure to check the "Allow Authorization" checkbox.
-
If none of
the above work, you can use the Web Access
for U-mail (Netscape Messenger Express) to send mail in a pinch.
