Protect Against Viruses

The beginning of Fall semester seems like a good time to remind you to protect your computer and your data by installing anti-virus software. McAfee for Windows and Virex for Macintosh are available through the NDUS site-license program at no charge to the University community.

Our campus does see a lot of virus activity. For example, the U-mail server has anti-virus software installed. On April 27, U-mail scanned 44,612 messages and removed 956 infected files. The Internet worm W32/Sobig.B was hitting our campus at that time. The impact of the worm on U-mail users was minimized due to the anti-virus software on the e-mail server, but that is only the first line of defense.

New viruses are identified each day therefore it is important that each of us takes the necessary steps to install and keep our anti-virus software up-to-date. There are many ways to obtain an infected file, including e-mail  on servers that may not scan for viruses,  downloading files directly from the web, or from someone else via diskette.

To download McAfee VirusScan please go to http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/virus.  Instructions to configure or change the AutoUpdate and AutoUpgrade schedules are located at http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/virus/mcafee-auto-update.htm.
