New arrivals to UND have many questions, some of them dealing with computers. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive here at ITSS, for additional information please see our web page at: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss.
How do I get an e-mail address? An account on U-mail, the general purpose e-mail host here at UND, may be activated via the web at: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/email.html. If you qualify for an e-mail address provided by a college/department, please contact your college/dept. computer support staff for details re: those services.
U-mail may be accessed using any
standard POP or IMAP client, e.g. Eudora, Netscape Messenger, & Outlook
Express*. Configuration instructions are located on the ITSS e-mail web page
(http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/email.html).
U-mail may also be accessed via the web (Messenger Express) at: http://und.nodak.edu. This method works from any
computer on the internet, be it at a campus lab, at home, or on the road.
* If you use Outlook/Outlook Express, it is highly recommended that you run
virus checking software since OE is a frequent target for transferring viruses.
Virus software and information is located at: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/virus.
Yes it does. You will need a U-mail account to use the dial-up services. Instructions for configuring your dial-up software are located at:http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/Usernotes/UserIndex.html#internet. UND has two local dialup modem pools, 777-0123 for routine access and 777-0125 for 15 minute access. Information about use can be found at: Internet Access from Home via Dial-Up.
Faculty may have web space on the UNDInfo system (www.und.nodak.edu) for instructional purposes. Departments and organizations may also request space on the UNDInfo web server. Applications are located at: http://www.und.edu/computing/, choose Apply for Web space within the UND Home Page section.
U-web, the student web server, is available for currently enrolled students to post homework assignments, portfolios, and resumes. The first step in obtaining web space is to activate a U-mail account, then go to http://uweb.und.nodak.edu. The process of transferring files to U-web was rewritten over the summer. The revised process uses FTP (file transfer protocol). The previous method required you to choose the files to be transferred one at a time, FTP allows you to send many files at once. Special software is used to FTP files. The labs in the Union and Library have WS_FTP for Windows and Fetch for the Macintosh. Copies of this software may be downloaded from the software archive at: http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/its/software_download. Instructions for using the software are located at: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/uweb/pctutor/publish.html.
An NDUS (North Dakota University System) computer called abacus.nodak.edu is available for statistical analysis. SAS & SPSS are both installed on the system. You may request an individual account by going through the online enrollment process at: http://enroll.nodak.edu. If you wish to request class accounts, accounts that are only active for the semester and have a generic login & password, see the instructions on page: http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/itss/abacus/abacus.html. Be aware that class accounts are removed at the end of the semester, students requiring access to an account for longer than that should apply for an individual account via the online enrollment process.
